(American, 1972 – Present)
SELF TAUGHT Sculptor Dale
Mathis engages and captivates the viewer’s artistic
sensibilities with the soft whirring of hand made gears
and pistons awash in cool neon, while a commanding eye
stares straight through you, and, yes … those
are sculpted bullet holes in the frame. A dreamscape
vision sculpted into 3D reality.
Surrealism meets mechanicalism - a
merging of The Dream & the Machine

His
artwork possesses that rarest of artistic elements –
true originality. |
|
Dale Mathis’ artworks are
primarily mixed media, high relief wall
sculptures that challenge, and defy ready
classification. The Artworks are commanding,
not just artistically, but physically. A
“typical” Mathis artwork is mechanical, with
hand carved moving gears, neon lit, sculpted,
and often near 4 feet or more in 2 dimensions,
and a foot deep. Weighing 80lbs or more. Art
imitates life, or in this case the 6’3”, 300lb
Artist who creates them. Bigger is Better in
the world of Dale Mathis.
His creations also speak from the
heart of the discordant struggle of urban
American life. Born Dale Charles Mathis on
January 22, 1972. Mathis was raised in the Los
Angles community of Inglewood, California. His
was a childhood surrounded by gangs and crime.
His family and art from the earliest ages
shielded him and drew him to the path less
traveled. Deeply inspired by artists Edward M.
Bannister, Edmonia Lewis, and Joshua Johnson –
Dale Mathis knew from an early age he would be
an Artist. Growing up in “The Wood”, Art was
his escape into another reality he could create
for himself.

Shortly after his 19th
birthday he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. In
Vegas, Dale worked a variety of jobs including
Union Laborer/Construction Worker and Las Vegas
Strip Club Bouncer. Whatever it took to support
his real passion … Art, always Art.
Much like Paul Gaughan
- seeking to break with the intensity of urban
life and find solace and focus – Dale, at age
36, has for the last two years established a new
life as an Artist working fulltime from his
Studio in the Philippine Islands. Where the
idyllic environment, and people, culture, and
love of art have embraced him as he has them.
Bold, compelling themes and
sophisticated aesthetics landed Mathis’
sculpture “Crucifixion of a Legacy” on
MTV’s The Real World, Las Vegas XII,
which then brought him a segment on
HGTV’s, Crafters Coast to Coast.
The Executive Desk will be featured in
Playboy Magazine
– October 2008.
